Only 5% of people ever achieve financial freedom. Millions of people are facing stressful situations as retirement age is creeping up on them, a time when they are supposed to enjoy comfortable, carefree living – but just won’t. People are at increasing risk of developing diseases as they age. The present acute care models of health service delivery are inadequate to address the health needs of rapidly ageing populations (WHO, 2001). As the population ages, the demand will continue to rise for approaches that delay and treat chronic diseases, alleviate pain and improve quality of life and provide long term care for older people.
Given the high costs of institutional elder care, many countries, including South Africa, are encouraging older people to remain in community settings for as long as possible, but how would they survive if they cant live with their children? Accommodation in retirement has become an enormous issue in South Africa - and it will get worse. SASSA pensioners need to look for alternative options such as a communal home, sharing the cost of living and a 24hour care giver. The Filafund is a philantrophic trust fund provide support to help the elderly with daily meals, accomodation and care for the elderly and mentally ill and handicapped persons. Since 2001Young World Educare has been campaigning for the rights of vulnerable groups of people. Our efforts include creating public awareness around socio-economical issues adversely affecting almost all communities such as addiction, domestic violence, homelessness, people living in poverty and those living & working on the streets. Unemployment and woman surviving on prostitution also get our attention. For many years we focussed on children living in care facilities, children in foster care, adopted children and children living on the streets. Our research efforts provided a framework for child protection services in South Africa.
Since 2010 we focussed on people with mental illness, incl. personality and mood disorders- more often these sufferers come from a childhood background of abuse, neglect and sexual exploitation. Poverty and mental illness are definitely linked, but not everyoneone is poor.
It can happen to anyone.
Giving money is not the only way to make a diiference, tell us about your community issue and give us your goal, our team will put a plan into action to bring awareness.

In the past we collected data on the Dynamics and magnitude of CANE (child abuse, neglect & exploitation) in South Africa and used research to recommend improvement of child well-being and prevention of CANE. Our contributions the past 20 years assisted with possible solutions (if implemented) to the Streetkid phenomenon and influenced strategic intervention, the research altered SA policies and guided amendment of child care laws.
Awareness can be a first step toward changing behavior; it could help shift cultural norms, it will change lives, bring positive energy and create a better future.
