5 SEPTEMBER 2023 The International Day of Charity was established with the objective of sensitizing and mobilizing people, NGOs, and stakeholders all around the world to to help others through volunteer and philanthropic activities. The date of 5 September was chosen in order to commemorate the anniversary of the passing away of Mother Teresa of Calcutta, who received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979 "for work undertaken in the struggle to overcome poverty and distress, which also constitute a threat to peace." Mother Teresa died on September 5th 1997, at 87 years of age.

University versus College ART challenge, have some WACKY fun. Design a cRaZy- HaT poster and encourage the world to join the mental health awareness initiative. Design a poster that will bring mental health awareness and end mental illness discrimination. Create visually-arresting print adverts. Give your community an understanding about the topic of mental illness with a photograph and a heading – a subtitle if you want. Sensational. Simple. Striking. Design the poster to reach multiple groups and individuals - Of course your subject must wear a hat.
The 10th of October is a day for global mental health and suicide prevention education, including awareness and advocacy against social stigma. The intention is to create awareness, change perceptions, support mental health research and encourage mental health care worldwide.

Global mental health
The World Health Organization (WHO) defines mental health as ‘a state of well-being in which every individual realizes his or her own potential, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully, and is able to make a contribution to her or his community.’
1 in 4 people in the world will be affected by mental or neurological disorders at some point in their lives. Around 450 million people currently suffer from such conditions, placing mental disorders among the leading causes of ill-health and disability worldwide. Treatments are available, but nearly two-thirds of people with a known mental disorder never sought help from a health professional. A lack of mental health knowledge or literacy is still the leading cause of stigma. Stigma, discrimination and neglect prevent care and treatment from reaching people with mental disorders. Eliminating stigma promotes helpseeking behaviours and allows people to reach out and support each other.
THE EMPATHY HOPE PROJECT is a traveling art exhibition with a spotlight on #EMPATHY to curb stigma and #HOPE to encourage mental well-being. The exhibition aims to explore the factors that causes harm to our minds and our health, and to create an awareness of mental health. With a local South African focus, the exhibition opened up a visual discussion, on a public platform, informed by local voices in 2019. The space allowed people to relate to shared experiences with mental illness as well as the elements that impacts mental health.
This exhibition travel to all other cities, like KZN recently to the DURBAN ART GALLERY, in Smith Street, 2nd Floor, City Hall, incorporating local artists and local content that speaks to relevant communities. The Durban Edition of the #empathyhopeproject opened on 5 September 2019. Plans are on the way to exhibit in Durban again in 2020, expecting attendees from all spheres of the local community as well as international support, patrons of the art industry, students, mental health professionals, nonprofit organizations, university faculty, advocacy organizations, social worker organizations and more.
